Fujifilm sells Instax film in three sizes, and a camera built for one will not take the other two. Here is what each size prints, what each costs a shot, which cameras and printers use it, and which one to buy.
Fujifilm sells Instax film in three sizes, and the size you pick decides which cameras you can buy and what every shot costs from then on. Instax Mini prints 86 x 54 mm and runs about $0.88 a shot, the cheapest of the three and the size with the most cameras behind it. Instax Square prints 86 x 72 mm and is the only Instax film with a square picture. Instax Wide prints 86 x 108 mm, the largest of the three, and Fujifilm describes it as twice as wide as Mini film. Most buyers should start with Mini. Pick Square if the square picture is the point, and Wide if you photograph groups. Prices here were checked September 2026.

What the three films share
Fujifilm’s film pages give the same speed for Mini, Square and Wide: Hi-Speed ISO 800. Every cartridge holds 10 sheets, whichever size you buy, and the prints behave the same way once they leave the camera. instax says the film develops automatically in approximately 90 seconds, with no need to shake the print or send it anywhere.
What they do not share is a camera. Fujifilm sells Mini film for use in all instax mini cameras and the instax SHARE printer, Square film for use in all instax SQUARE instant cameras and instax SQUARE smartphone printers, and Wide film for use in all instax WIDE format cameras and the Wide Smartphone Printer. The sheets are different sizes, so the cartridges are too, and no adapter bridges them. Picking a format locks in both a camera range and a per-shot price.
Instax Mini
Mini prints 86 x 54 mm with a 62 x 46 mm picture, which is roughly a credit card. Fujifilm’s own line for the size is credit card sized joy.
It is the cheapest film to run. A twin pack of 20 shots was $17.50, about $0.88 a shot, against about $1.20 a shot for Wide and $1.47 to $1.75 for Square.
Mini also has the deepest camera range by a wide margin. The analog cameras run from the Mini SE at $69.95 through the Mini 12 at $82.99, the Mini 13 at $89.95 and the Mini 41 at $110.29, up to the Mini 99 at $177.18, which is the only Fujifilm analog Instax on sale with double exposure and bulb mode.
The hybrids, which shoot digitally and print only the frames you keep, run from the Mini LiPlay at $151.95 to the Mini Evo at $234 and the Mini Evo Cinema at $409. Two printers take Mini film: the Mini Link 3 at $109 and the Mini Link Plus at $159.01. Amazon buyers rate the Mini Link 3 4.7 out of 5 across 724 ratings, the highest score of any current Instax printer.

Mini suits a first instant camera, a gift, a party or a kid, because the entry price is low and the film is cheap enough to hand around. Digital Camera World’s verdict on the Mini 12 was that it is still the best bang-for-buck instant camera you can buy. The cost is print size: a 62 x 46 mm picture is small on a wall and small in a group shot.
Instax Square
Square prints 86 x 72 mm with a 62 x 62 mm picture. That 1:1 picture is what people are usually after, and Fujifilm publishes it as 62mm x 62mm on the Square film page. It is the only Instax film that gives you a square without cropping.
Square film is the most expensive of the three per shot in the packs we priced. A 20-shot twin pack was $29.45, about $1.47 a shot. A single 20-shot pack was $34.99, about $1.75 a shot.
The camera range is thin. Fujifilm currently sells two analog Square cameras and no hybrid. The SQ1 lists at $119.95, though at the September 2026 check it was $193.99 on Amazon, above the SQ40’s $166.31. Both are point and shoot only, with no self timer, no manual control and a flash that fires on every frame. Two CR2 lithium cells run them for about 300 shots. The SQ40 is the plainer, leatherette one at 453 g; the SQ1 is lighter at 390 g and comes in Chalk White, Terracotta Orange and Glacier Blue. TechRadar’s line on the SQ40 was that it is everything an instant camera should be, stylish and point-and-shoot simple, delivering decent-sized square prints, though pricier than the Mini 12 and restricting for anyone wanting to get more creative.

The printer is the better way into Square for a lot of people. The Square Link was $156.18 and prints at 320 dpi in about 12 seconds. Digital Camera World’s James Artaius called it a real Goldilocks in terms of price and picture size, making it the sweet spot in Instax’s printer lineup. Since the phone in your pocket takes the picture, you also avoid the SQ1’s fixed exposure and its missing self timer.
Instax Wide
Wide prints 86 x 108 mm with a 62 x 99 mm picture. Fujifilm’s own description of the film is twice as wide as the instax mini Instant Film, now there’s room for everyone, and that is the whole argument for the size: more people fit in the frame.
Film costs about $1.20 a shot, from a 5-pack of 100 shots at $119.95. That is more than Mini and less than Square, though the Wide figure comes from a larger pack than the Square ones.
The range is two cameras and one printer. The Wide 400 was $164.67, weighs 616 g, runs on four AA batteries and has both a self timer and a tripod socket. It has no selfie mirror. Digital Camera World called it a clear improvement on the Wide 300, with a more appealing design and useful additions like a self timer and angle-adjustment accessory, though it’s still as big as ever. Amazon buyers rate it 4.0 out of 5 across 331 ratings, against 4.6 for the Mini 12 and the SQ1.
The Wide Evo is the hybrid at $366, with a 3.5-inch screen, 10 lens effects and 10 film effects, and a tripod socket. TechRadar called it one of the most stylish instant hybrid cameras yet, combining retro looks with large instant prints, though at a hefty price, almost double the Mini Evo. The Link Wide printer lists at $199.95.

Wide is the format for weddings, parties and group shots, and for anything you want to hang up. What you give up is portability. At 616 g the Wide 400 is twice the weight of the 306 g Mini 12, and no Wide camera fits a pocket.
Which format to choose
Buy Instax Mini unless you have a reason not to. It has the cheapest film at $0.88 a shot, the widest choice of cameras from $69.95 up, and two printers. If it turns out you want bigger prints later, a printer in another format costs less than a second camera and prints from the same phone.
Buy Instax Square if you want a square picture and will not settle for cropping a Mini print. Get there through the Square Link printer at $156.18 rather than the SQ1 or SQ40, unless you specifically want an analog camera, because the two Square cameras cost more than the Mini cameras and do less.
Buy Instax Wide if you mostly shoot groups. The Wide 400 at $164.67 has a self timer and a tripod socket, which the Mini 12, the SQ1 and the SQ40 all lack, and that is what a group shot needs. Its film also costs less per shot than Square film.

Whichever you pick, the film keeps costing you long after the camera is paid for. At $0.88, $1.20 and $1.47 to $1.75 a shot, 200 frames in a year cost about $176 on Mini, about $240 on Wide and $294 to $350 on Square.
