The Liene Amber M100 is the best 4x6 photo printer for most homes: $159.99, about $0.46 a print, and it prints from a laptop as well as a phone.
A 4x6 printer makes the same size of print you would get from a photo counter, at home and in about a minute. Every pick below uses dye-sublimation, so the prints come out dry and laminated. The real differences are running cost, how each one connects, and whether it needs a wall outlet.
Best overall: Liene Amber M100
Liene Amber M100 4x6 Photo PrinterBest overall
Street price: $159.99 (list $181.99)
Amazon rating: 4.4 out of 5 (4,460 ratings)
Pros
- photo quality that reviewers rate the best of the mainstream 4x6 dye-sub printers
- the gloss lamination pass leaves prints waterproof and fingerprint-proof
- five devices can be on its Wi-Fi at once
Cons
- mains only, no battery, so it stays on a desk
- prints are not exactly 4 x 6 after the tabs come off
- no black ink, so it is useless for documents
The Liene Amber M100 makes the best-rated 4x6 prints of the printers we track. Alison Winterroth tested five 4x6 printers side by side and ranked the Liene Amber first, saying every print was the closest to the original image and each was printed crisply and without flaws. RTINGS found it prints amazingly detailed photos, though some colors are not perfectly accurate. Reviews single out teal and green as the colors that drift.
It connects to computers as well as phones. The printer makes its own Wi-Fi network for up to five devices and supports AirPrint and Mopria, so a Mac or Windows laptop can print to it, and it has a USB-C port for a computer too. There is no Bluetooth.
Paper costs 46 cents a print in Liene’s 80-sheet pack with two cartridges, $36.99 at Amazon on October 5, 2026. The 40-sheet pack at $20.99 works out to 52 cents. One cartridge covers exactly 40 sheets, so paper and ribbon run out together. The printer was $159.99 that day.
It plugs into the wall, with no battery, and weighs 1.2 kg. A print takes about 59 seconds. It has no black ink, so it cannot print documents. The paper has tear-off tabs at each end, so the finished print is slightly smaller than 4 x 6 inches.
Amazon buyers rate it 4.4 from 4,460 ratings. That rating sits on the 100-sheet bundle listing. Liene has less independent testing behind it than Canon or Kodak, and our record leans on three reviews.
If you need a battery or sticker prints, the M200 and M110 below share its print engine.
Runner-up: Canon Selphy CP1500
Canon Selphy CP1500Runner-up
Street price: $159.00 (list $179.99)
Amazon rating: 4.4 out of 5 (2,708 ratings)
Pros
- prints that reviewers compare with a commercial photo lab
- prints come out dry, water-resistant and marker-ready
- prints from a phone, a computer, an SD card or a USB stick
Cons
- the battery pack is an optional extra
- no Bluetooth
- screen is not a touchscreen
Wirecutter lists the Canon Selphy CP1500 as its 4x6 pick, and PCMag has named it its Editors’ Choice for portable printers. Gordon Laing at Cameralabs found its postcard prints match most commercial labs. It sits second here because the Liene has the better record on color: TechGearLab ranked the CP1500 third of ten photo printers but found its colors muted, with gray-blue blacks.
It is the most flexible printer on this page. It prints over Wi-Fi from a phone, either directly or through your home router, and supports AirPrint. It also prints from a computer over USB-C, from an SD card or from a USB flash drive. You can choose photos on its 3.5-inch screen with no phone at all, which suits anyone who also shoots on a camera. It can print passport and ID photos too. There is no Bluetooth, and the screen is not a touchscreen.
It is cheap to run. Canon’s KP-108IN set, 108 postcard sheets with three ink cassettes, was $39.95 at Amazon on October 5, 2026, which is 37 cents a print, level with the Kodak Dock Plus. The printer was $159, under its $179.99 list price. Canon also sells smaller L, card and square-label sets, each with its own cassette.
Prints come out 100 x 148 mm once the tear-off tabs are removed, dry, water-resistant and ready to write on. You can choose glossy, semi-gloss or satin. Canon’s manual gives 41 seconds for a glossy print and 56 for the other two.
The battery is an extra. Canon rates its optional NB-CP2LH pack at up to 54 prints a charge. Without it, the CP1500 runs from its power adapter. It weighs 850 g.
Amazon shows 4.4 from 2,708 ratings, but that count is pooled across the Black and White listings and two bundles.
Best budget: Kodak Dock Plus
Kodak Dock Plus 4x6 Photo PrinterBest budget
Street price: $99.99
Amazon rating: 4.2 out of 5 (19,884 ratings)
Pros
- 4x6 prints that look close to a drugstore photo counter
- laminated finish resists water and fingerprints
- docking the phone charges it while it prints
Cons
- needs mains power, so it is a desk printer not a portable one
- the app's editing and collage tools are basic next to Canon's
- about a minute a print, slow if you have a stack to do
The Kodak Dock Plus is the cheapest printer here to buy, at $99.99 on October 5, 2026, and it ties the Selphy CP1500 as the cheapest to run. Kodak’s 80-sheet cartridge refill was $29.99 at Amazon that day, which is 37 cents a print.
The dock is the unusual part. You can sit your phone on its USB-C connector, with a Lightning adapter in the box for older iPhones, and the printer charges the phone while it prints. It also prints over Bluetooth, so you do not have to dock. Ink and paper come in one Kodak 4PASS cartridge, which is simple to load.
Print quality is a step behind the Liene. In Alison Winterroth’s five-printer test, its color fell a little short of the top few but was still decent, at about 39 cents a print and 60 seconds each. Jim Grey found its snapshots comparable to a local store’s photo department.
It runs from wall power only and weighs 760 g. A print takes about 50 seconds by Kodak’s figure. The app’s editing and collage tools are basic next to Canon’s. Each print has perforated tabs at both ends that you tear off.
Amazon shows 4.2 from 19,884 ratings on its listing, the largest count of our picks. The same cartridge also fits Kodak’s newer Dock ERA Plus.
Best battery-powered: Liene Amber M200
Liene Amber M200 4x6 Photo Printer (Battery Edition)Best battery-powered
Street price: $169.99 (list $241.99)
Amazon rating: 4.5 out of 5 (565 ratings)
Pros
- about 40 prints a charge from the built-in battery
- same print quality as the well-reviewed M100
- a Wi-Fi hotspot the printer makes itself, so it works with no router
Cons
- bulky and heavy for something battery powered, at 1.2 kg
- photo-only, no documents
- no Bluetooth, so pairing means joining the printer's Wi-Fi
The Liene Amber M200 is the M100 with a battery built in. It is the only 4x6 dye-sub printer in our database with a built-in battery; the Selphy CP1500 needs an optional pack. It runs about 40 prints on a charge, the same as one cartridge, and it also runs from the included power adapter. That makes it the one to take to a party, a campsite or a vacation rental.
Everything else matches the M100. It has the same body and print engine, so Alison Winterroth’s and RTINGS’s verdicts on the Liene Amber apply. It uses the same paper at 46 cents a print, makes its own Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five devices, and prints from a computer over USB-C and from an iPhone over AirPrint. A print takes about 59 seconds.
The battery cost $10 on October 5, 2026. The M200 was $169.99 at Amazon against $159.99 for the M100.
The cost is weight. The M200 is 1.2 kg and 205 x 125 x 85 mm, so it travels in a car or a bag, not a pocket. It has no Bluetooth, so pairing means joining the printer’s own Wi-Fi network. Very little independent testing covers this variant itself.
Amazon buyers rate it 4.5 from 565 ratings. Liene’s own store showed it sold out on October 5, 2026, but Amazon had it. If you want a printer for a bag rather than a car, our portable photo printer picks list smaller options; the M200 appears there as the portable 4x6 pick.
Best for printing anywhere in the house: HP Sprocket Studio Plus
HP Sprocket Studio Plus 4x6 Photo PrinterBest for printing anywhere in the house
Street price: $149.99 (list $199.99)
Amazon rating: 4.0 out of 5 (807 ratings)
Pros
- prints are close to what a drugstore or Costco photo counter produces
- accurate skin tones and good sharpness
- joins a home Wi-Fi network rather than making its own, so it prints from anywhere in the house
Cons
- a print takes a minute and a half to two minutes
- paper and cartridge can only be bought together, in one pack size
- 44 cents a print is more than a photo lab charges
The HP Sprocket Studio Plus joins your home Wi-Fi network. The Liene M100 and M200 make their own network, so your phone has to switch over to print. The Selphy CP1500 can do either. With the Studio Plus, anyone on the home network can print from any room. It also has Bluetooth 5.0.
Reviewers like the prints. Alison Winterroth ranked it second of her five, praising its accurate skin tones, sharpness and clarity. Wasim Ahmad at Fstoppers called it a great 4x6 dye-sub printer, “but it’s not necessarily the most cost-effective one”.
That is the catch. HP sells paper and cartridges only together, 108 sheets with two cartridges for $46.99 at Amazon on October 5, 2026, which is about 44 cents a print. Fstoppers and Lon Seidman each measured the same 44 cents. That is a few cents under the Liene’s 46, but you cannot buy a smaller pack.
It is also the slowest here. A print takes about 90 seconds, and reviewers report up to two minutes. It needs wall power, weighs 1.15 kg, and its paper tray sticks out, so it needs clear space on the desk. The tray holds up to 18 sheets. Like the others, prints are borderless only after you tear off the perforated tabs.
The printer was $149.99 at Amazon, under its $199.99 list price. Amazon buyers rate it 4.0 from 807 ratings, on the 10-sheet starter listing. It uses the same HP Sprocket app as HP’s pocket printers.
Best for photos and stickers: Liene Amber M110
Liene Amber M110 Bluetooth Photo PrinterBest for photos and stickers
Street price: $169.99 (list $241.99)
Amazon rating: 4.5 out of 5 (337 ratings)
Pros
- the dual tray switches between 4x6 photos and 3x3 stickers without changing cartridges
- print quality matches the well-regarded M100
- up and running in under ten minutes from the box
Cons
- mains only, no battery
- Liene does not publish dimensions or weight for this model
- two sets of consumables to keep stocked
The Liene Amber M110 prints both 4x6 photos and 3x3 inch sticker prints. You switch between them by changing the tray, not the cartridge. Alison Winterroth called that “fantastic” and said the print quality remains excellent. It uses the same 300 dpi dye-sub engine and 4x6 paper as the M100.
The sticker paper is a separate refill: 40 sheets and one cartridge for $26.99 on October 5, 2026, about 67 cents a sticker. The 4x6 photos cost the same 46 cents as on the M100. You will need to keep two sets of consumables in stock.
It connects differently from the M100. The M110 uses Bluetooth, which pairs in about 13 seconds and holds up to five devices at once, and it also prints from Windows and macOS. That suits a party where several phones queue prints.
It needs wall power and has no battery. Liene publishes no dimensions or weight for it. And there is only one substantial independent review, Alison Winterroth’s, so the M110 has the thinnest track record of our picks.
It was $169.99 at Amazon, the same as the M200. Amazon buyers rate it 4.5 from 337 ratings, on the 80-sheet bundle listing.
Why 4x6 printers use dye-sub
Every 4x6 printer here uses dye-sublimation. Heat moves cyan, magenta and yellow dye from a ribbon onto the paper, one color per pass, and a clear overcoat goes on last. The finished print is dry, laminated and resists water and fingerprints. That is why these prints look closer to a photo counter than the Zink sticker prints from pocket printers. Our Instax vs Zink comparison covers the other two print types.
Two things follow from how the paper feeds. The Liene, Canon, HP and Kodak papers carry tear-off tabs at each end, so the finished print is a little smaller than 4 x 6 inches. And the ribbon and paper are sold together, so you cannot shop around for cheaper ink.
Cost per print compared
| Printer | Paper pack (October 5, 2026) | Cost per print |
|---|---|---|
| Kodak Dock Plus | 80 sheets, $29.99 | $0.37 |
| Canon Selphy CP1500 | 108 sheets and 3 ink cassettes, $39.95 | $0.37 |
| HP Sprocket Studio Plus | 108 sheets and 2 cartridges, $46.99 | $0.44 |
| Liene Amber M100, M200, M110 | 80 sheets and 2 cartridges, $36.99 | $0.46 |
| Liene Amber M110 sticker | 40 sheets and 1 cartridge, $26.99 | about $0.67 |
| Polaroid Hi-Print 4x6 | Alison Winterroth’s figure, not re-priced | about $0.50 |
Over 100 prints, the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive photo paper here is about $9 to $13. That is small next to the difference in printer prices, so choose on connection and battery first.
These printers only print photos. None has black ink, and none can print a document.
Home printer or photo lab?
A photo lab can still be cheaper per print. HP Studio Plus owners say 44 cents a print is more than a photo lab charges, and Lon Seidman wrote that it costs a little more than a lab print. Jim Grey said bulk printing is still cheaper at a retail counter than on the Kodak Dock Plus, and Gordon Laing at Cameralabs said the Selphy CP1500 costs more per print than a lab.
What a home printer buys you is the print now. You can print one photo for a card tonight, or a few at a party, without placing an order or making a trip. If you print a hundred vacation photos at once, a lab order makes more sense. If you print a few at a time, often, a home 4x6 printer is the better fit.
Want something pocket-sized?
Every printer here with a published weight is 760 g or more, and only the M200 has a built-in battery. For prints you can make from a jacket pocket, see our best portable photo printer guide. Most of its picks print smaller, on 2 x 3 inch Zink stickers, dye-sub cards or Instax Mini film, and the HP Sprocket weighs 173 g.
Printers we left out
Polaroid Hi-Print 4x6. It was $149.99 on October 5, 2026, with 3.4 from only 10 Amazon ratings. Every comparison in its record rates its print quality the weakest, and at about 50 cents a print it was the most expensive of the five in Alison Winterroth’s test. It weighs 980 g and has no paper in the box.
Kodak Dock Era. It uses the same cartridge as the Dock Plus, but its Amazon listing now leads to a gift bundle, and Kodak’s own store showed it sold out on October 5, 2026. With no current price, we pick the Dock Plus instead.
How we chose
We have not tested most of these printers in person yet.
