Instax prints on real instant film at about $0.91 a shot. Zink prints sticky-backed paper with heat for about 48 to 58 cents. Choose Instax for the better-looking print and Zink for cheap stickers.
Instax and Zink are two common ways to get a small instant print from a phone or a pocket camera. Instax is Fujifilm’s instant film: light exposes the sheet and chemistry inside it develops the picture. Zink is a paper with the colour already built in, and a print head brings it out with heat. Both come in pocket printers and in cameras with a printer inside. They differ on how the print looks, what it costs and whether it peels off as a sticker.
The short answer
Choose Instax if the print itself matters. The colour is better, the print has the classic white frame, and Instax Mini film costs about $0.91 a shot. The Instax Mini Link 3 printer was $99.95 at the October 5, 2026 price check.
Choose Zink if you want cheap stickers for journals, lockers and scrapbooks. A 2x3 Zink print costs about 48 to 58 cents, the paper is sticky-backed, and the Kodak Step printer was $79.99. Expect weaker colour.

How each one makes a print
Instax is integral instant film. Each sheet holds everything needed to expose, develop and fix the picture. To develop it, a pod of reagent on one side of the sheet is broken and spread across it. Fujifilm says Instax photos use silver halide technology and that a Mini print develops in about 90 seconds. In an analog Instax camera such as the Mini 12 or Mini 13, the lens exposes the film directly. In the Mini Link 3 printer, Fujifilm lists the exposure method as “3-color exposure with OLED”: the printer exposes your phone photo onto the film with an OLED light source.
Zink paper has three heat-sensitive layers holding colourless dye crystals, which turn yellow, magenta or cyan when they melt. The printer picks the colour by the length and heat of each pulse. There is no ink, toner or ribbon, and the sheet goes through once. Zink started as a project inside Polaroid in the 1990s and became its own company in 2005. Each new pack of HP Zink paper comes with a blue calibration card that the printer reads first, and the Kodak Step uses a blue Kodak card the same way.
The practical difference: a Zink print from the Sprocket, Ivy 2 or Step comes out finished in 40 to 60 seconds. An Instax print leaves the Link 3 in about 15 seconds and then takes about 90 seconds to develop.
Print size and look
| Instax Mini | Zink 2x3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet size | 86 x 54 mm | 76 x 51 mm |
| Picture size | 62 x 46 mm | not in our records |
| Back | No adhesive | Sticky-backed paper |
| Cost per print | about $0.91 | about $0.48 to $0.58 |
The Instax Mini sheet is slightly larger, but much of it is the white frame. The Canon Ivy 2’s Zink prints are borderless, so the picture fills the sheet. Zink also comes larger: HP’s Sprocket 3x4 and Kodak’s Smile Classic print on 3.5x4.25-inch paper.
On looks, the reviews favour Instax. Amazon buyers praise the Mini Link 3 for vibrant, true-to-screen colour. Tom’s Guide said the HP Sprocket was held back by “major colour issues”. Kodak Step owners report prints that skew pink and white streaks that need the calibration card run again. Pocket-lint said the Step and other Zink products “will not be the answer if you are looking for quality”. One journaling blogger compared the Sprocket with an Instax printer, found an orange tinge on the Zink prints, and picked the Instax.
Not every review is harsh. PCMag gave its Editors’ Choice to the Sprocket 2nd Edition for its print quality, and to the Step among Zink models. The Canon Ivy 2 has the best reputation of the three 2x3 printers: PCMag said it “prints good-looking photos and stickers at competitive running costs”.
Instax has its own complaint: Mini Link 3 buyers mention occasional bad batches of film that hurt print quality.

Instax Mini film costs 33 to 43 cents more a print than 2x3 Zink, or about one and a half to twice as much. Bigger packs bring Zink down further: 100 sheets of HP paper were $44.99, about 45 cents, and 100 sheets of Canon paper were $49.00, about 49 cents.
The printers cost about the same. The Kodak Step was $79.99, the HP Sprocket $89.99 and the Canon Ivy 2 $99.00, against $99.95 for the Mini Link 3. With 100 prints, a Step comes to about $129, and a Link 3 to about $191.
Battery life favours Instax. The Link 3 is rated for about 100 prints a charge. The Sprocket manages 35, the Step 25 and the Ivy 2 about 20.
Sticky backs
This is the main reason to pick Zink. The 2x3 Zink papers for the Sprocket, Step and Ivy 2 all have a peel-off sticky back, and buyers use the prints for journals, planners, lockers and laptops. The Ivy 2’s app can also split one photo across four or nine sheets that you stick together as a small poster. Zink says its paper resists water, tears and smudges.
Fujifilm describes Instax photos as water resistant and suited to keeping in a wallet or phone case.
Cameras and printers for each
Instax and Zink each come in cameras and in phone printers.
Zink cameras are digital: a sensor takes the picture and a built-in Zink printer prints it. The Kodak Printomatic ($69.99), Smile, Smile+, Step Touch and Smile Classic print on Zink, as do Canon’s Ivy Cliq2 and Ivy Cliq+2. Our Kodak vs Polaroid page covers the Kodak cameras.
Instax Mini cameras are mostly analog, with no sensor and no digital copy. The Mini 13 was $79.95 and the Mini 12 $82.94. The Mini Evo and Mini LiPlay are hybrids that take a digital photo and print the ones you choose on Instax Mini film. Our Instax printer vs camera page explains that choice.

The Sprocket and Step have by far the most ratings. Read the Sprocket’s 4.5 with care: Amazon pools it with the Sprocket Select, so it is not for one model alone. Not every Zink printer uses the same paper. The Sprocket Select takes its own 2.3x3.4-inch sheets, the Sprocket 3x4 takes 3.5x4.25-inch paper at about 80 cents a print, and the Panorama prints strips cut from a 2-inch roll. Our HP Sprocket vs Kodak Step page compares those two.

The Link 3 is the one most buyers should look at. The Mini Link+ prints at the same 318 dpi in the same 15 seconds and costs $158.40. Fujifilm also makes larger Instax printers for Square and Wide film, covered in our Instax Mini vs Square vs Wide guide.
Which to buy into
Buy into Instax if you want prints to keep, frame or give away. The colour is better, the classic framed print is the point, and the Link 3 runs for about 100 prints a charge. Accept about 91 cents a shot and no sticky back.
Buy into Zink if the prints are for sticking: journals, scrapbooks, a child’s bedroom wall or party favours. A Kodak Step and 100 prints cost about $62 less than a Link 3 and 100 prints. Accept colour that often needs correcting in the app.
If you already own one system, stay with it. Neither paper works in the other’s printer.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Instax and Zink?
Instax is Fujifilm's instant film. Light exposes the sheet, and a chemical reagent inside it develops the picture over about 90 seconds. Zink is a paper with colourless dye crystals built into it, which a print head turns yellow, magenta and cyan with heat. Zink needs no ink or cartridge, and the print comes out finished.
Is Zink cheaper than Instax?
Yes. At the October 5, 2026 price check, 2x3 Zink paper cost about $0.48 a print for HP Sprocket paper, $0.49 for Kodak and $0.58 for Canon. Instax Mini film cost about $0.91 a shot, at $18.17 for a twin pack of 20. A hundred prints cost about $48 to $58 on Zink and about $91 on Instax Mini.
Which looks better, Instax or Zink?
Instax, according to the reviews in our records. Buyers praise the Instax Mini Link 3 for vibrant, true-to-screen colour. Zink printers draw repeated complaints about pink, orange or washed-out colour, and Pocket-lint said Zink products will not be the answer if you are looking for quality. The Canon Ivy 2 has the best reputation among 2x3 Zink printers.
Are Instax or Zink prints sticky?
The 2x3 Zink papers for the HP Sprocket, Kodak Step and Canon Ivy 2 are sticky-backed, so each print peels off as a sticker. The Wikipedia article on Zink describes the adhesive as an optional backing layer. Fujifilm describes Instax photos as water resistant and suited to wallets and phone cases.
Can I use Zink paper in an Instax printer?
No. The Instax Mini Link 3 and Mini Link+ take only Instax Mini film, and Zink printers take only Zink paper. Zink sizes do not swap either: the HP Sprocket Select's 2.3x3.4 paper is not interchangeable with 2x3 Sprocket paper.
