The Mini 41 is a fully automatic point-and-shoot and the Mini 99 gives you brightness, colour and exposure control for about $67 more. The Mini 99 is the one to buy unless you only ever want to press one button.
Fujifilm sells the Instax Mini 41 and the Mini 99 alongside each other. The Mini 41 arrived in 2025 and the Mini 99 in 2024. They load the same film and print the same size picture. What separates them is how much of the shot you get to decide, and about $67.
What is actually different
The Mini 41 makes every decision for you. Focus is fixed from 0.3 m and beyond, with a close-up mode from 0.3 to 0.5 m that corrects for parallax, the gap between what the viewfinder sees and what the lens records. Exposure is automatic, Lv 5.0 to 14.5 at ISO 800. The shutter runs 1/2 to 1/250 second with slow synchro for low light. The flash fires on every frame, recycles in 7 seconds or less and reaches 0.3 to 2.2 m. There is no self timer, no double exposure, no bulb mode and no tripod socket. Two AA batteries run it for about 100 shots, it weighs 345 g and it comes in one colour, Vintage Black.
The Mini 99 hands most of that back. Its 60 mm f/12.7 lens retracts into the body and focuses in three zones: macro from 0.3 to 0.6 m, standard from 0.6 to 3.0 m and landscape from 3.0 m to infinity. A brightness dial sets five levels, L+, L, N, D and D-, so you can push a frame lighter or darker than the meter wants. Six colour-effect filters change the cast of the picture. The shutter runs from 1.8 seconds to 1/400 second, with a bulb mode that holds open for up to 10 seconds. Shooting modes cover Normal, Indoor, Sports, Double Exposure and Bulb. The flash can be set to automatic, fill-in, red-eye removal or off, and reaches 0.3 to 2.7 m. There is a self timer, a tripod socket, an LCD panel for the shooting mode and film counter, and two shutter buttons, one for portrait and one for landscape. It runs on an NP-70S rechargeable battery, also about 100 shots, weighs 305 g and comes in Black or Silver.
Reviewers split along the same line. TechRadar called the Mini 41 a fun, easy-to-use instant camera with a handsome design and a great price, and Amateur Photographer said much the same: quick, fun and easy. Cameralabs described it as a refinement of the Mini 40 with better parallax correction and automatic flash control. On the Mini 99, Tom’s Guide said it shines in both form and function, with a decent range of creative controls that are accessible and fun to use. TechRadar called it a grown-up addition to the Instax family whose manual options give more seasoned photographers room to experiment. Digital Camera World said it offers the most advanced controls of any Instax so far.
Price and film cost
At the last price check, on September 9, 2026, the Mini 41 was $110.29 and the Mini 99 was $177.18. The list prices are $109.95 and $199.95, so the Mini 99 was running about $23 under list and the Mini 41 was sitting at its own.
Film is identical. Both take Instax Mini film, 86 x 54 mm with a 62 x 46 mm image, at about $0.88 a shot, with a twin pack of 20 shots at $17.50. The $67 gap between the two cameras is worth about 76 shots of film. Batteries add to that: the Mini 41 needs two fresh AAs every 100 shots, the Mini 99 recharges.
Which one to buy
Buy the Mini 99 if you want to change anything about your pictures. The brightness dial, the colour filters, double exposure, the bulb mode and the tripod socket are all things the Mini 41 cannot do at any price, and buyers rate it 4.6 out of 5 across 178 ratings.
Buy the Mini 41 if you want to hand a camera to someone and have them press one button. It costs $67 less and takes the same 86 x 54 mm print. For a lot of buyers the retro black body is the point. The Mini 41’s own reviewers flag the price, though: it is fully automatic, and the cheaper Mini 12 has the same core feature set.
